Distraction-free dining in Los Angeles

Eva Restaurant, a 40-seat eatery in the Mid-City West neighbourhood of Los Angeles, is bribing diners with 5% off their bill if they turn in their mobile phones before being seated.
The offer, which was added to the bottom of the menu around two months ago, put the restaurant in the global spotlight thanks to a recent National Public Radio interview that struck a chord with diners and other restaurants dealing with an age of distracted dining via Facebook status updates and tweeting.
While upscale restaurants around the world struggle with how to handle the growing popularity of mobile phones at dining tables, Eva leaves it up to its customers to hand in their phones to the hostess who will then store them in baskets with their name on them and return them on the customers way out.
Eva Restaurant owner and chef Mark Gold came up with the incentive in an effort to improve the ambiance of his restaurant.
“Everyone had cell phones on the table and they’re texting and talking throughout their dinner and we wanted people to connect again,” said Gold. About 50% of his patrons love the idea, and so far no one has broken the rules and asked for the phone back during the meal.
The restaurant has no plans to increase the discount. “We don't think they are coming for the actual discount as I think they like the idea of connecting over dinner,” said Gold

Real Madrid beat Barcelona to win Spanish Super Cup

Real Madrid

Real Madrid beat Barcelona to win Spanish Super Cup

Real capitalised on two blunders to quickly go 2-0 up in the second leg at the Bernabeu, with Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo firing in.
Barcelona had Adriano red-carded for hauling down Ronaldo but the visitors pulled one back through a superb 35-yard Lionel Messi free-kick.
Both sides then missed clear-cut chances before Real prevailed.

El Clasico fast facts

  • Real Madrid's victory gives them their first Super Cup win since 2008.
  • Real had failed to win in their last seven home meetings with Barcelona.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in his last five El Clasico outings.
  • Lionel Messi has scored 15 goals in El Clasico games - he is now joint second with Raul and three behind Alfredo di Stefano.
The defeat meant Tito Vilanova was denied his first trophy as Barcelona boss and he will need to look no further than his lacklustre defence for the reason.
He had warned his side that Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid outfit would have extra motivation, because not only were they chasing the first silverware of the Spanish season, they were also looking for their first win of the new campaign at the fourth attempt.
But his players did not heed his words and Higuain, who had an early shot saved, stole in after Barcelona centre-back Javier Mascherano missed Pepe's speculative lobbed clearance to sidefoot through the legs of keeper Valdes.
Another defensive mistake let in Ronaldo and, after audaciously back-heeling the ball over centre-back Gerard Pique, he bided his time before powering in a shot to put Real 4-3 ahead overall.
The hosts were scything through Barcelona's flimsy defence at will and Valdes had to fend away yet another Higuain effort in a one-on-one confrontation.

Barca briefly threatened and centre-back Pepe headed in a Xabi Alonso free-kick but the goal was disallowed for a push on Mascherano.
But the visitors were struggling to cope and Adriano's dismissal for a professional foul in the 28th minute only increased the size of their task, although Messi's spectacular free-kick just before half-time gave the visitors hope.
Pedro could have brought 10-man Barca level after beautifully controlling a long Mascherano pass, but his shot was saved by Iker Casillas.
In another captivating El Clasico there were plenty of chances as Barcelona strived for the goal that would have earned them an aggregate win, while Real attempted to put their arch rivals away once and for all.
New Real signing Luka Modric, on as a substitute, had a close-range strike blocked before Messi drove an injury-time shot agonisingly wide for Barcelona as the home side held on for their first Super Cup victory since 2008.

Andrew Strauss: England captain retires from cricket

England captain Andrew Strauss has retired from all forms of cricket.
Strauss skippered his country in 50 of his 100 Tests and is handing over to one-day captain Alastair Cook.

The highs and lows of a captain

During his time in charge, England emerged from the chaos of Kevin Pietersen's resignation as captain to become the world's top Test team.
But the road to the top was anything but easy for Strauss. His reign came at a turbulent time for English cricket as controversy on and off the pitch dogged his spell as captain.
Strauss, 35, said: "For me the driver to it all quite frankly was my form with the bat. In truth, I haven't batted well enough for a long time now. I think I have run my race."
He denied his decision to quit was influenced by the furore over Kevin Pietersen's axing from the team.
Strauss scored 7,037 Test runs at an average of 40.91, leaving him ninth in England's all-time run-scorers list.
During his time in charge, England became the world's best Test team for the first time.
Cook, 27, will take charge of his country for the first time in the four-Test series against India in November.
He said: "I'm very excited by this new challenge. It is a huge honour to be appointed Test captain and I am very much looking forward to captaining the side in India this winter and beyond."
Everyone in the media respected and admired him for the way he conducted himself in the job, but much more importantly he took those same credentials and abilities into the dressing room, and that is why he was so well respected in there"
Strauss was England's third-most experienced captain and the second-most successful behind Michael Vaughan, with a record of 24 wins from his 50 matches at the helm.
He also led the side to home and away Ashes triumphs during a run of victories that saw them crowned as the world's number one team for the first time since the rankings were introduced.
Strauss added: "I am extremely proud of everything I have achieved as a cricketer and I have found myself very fortunate to play in an era when some of English cricket's greatest moments have occurred. I have loved every minute of it.
"It hasn't been something that occurred overnight. It has built over a few months. I would like to go out on my own terms with my head held high and I think this is the right time."
The retirement of Strauss will be overshadowed to an extent by the unsavoury controversy involving star batsman Pietersen.
Strauss was said to be the subject of "provocative" text messages that Pietersen sent to South African players during England's 3-0 series defeat by the Proteas.

Strauss's record as captain

  • Tests: 50
  • Runs: 3,343
  • Average: 40.76
  • 50s: 14
  • Centuries: 9
  • Catches: 60
  • Highest score: 169 (v West Indies, Feb 2009)
  • Wins: 24
  • Losses: 11
  • Draws: 15
But Strauss was insistent he had made a decision about his future before the news of the texts broke on the eve of his 100th Test match at Lord's.
"I first spoke to Andy Flower about it prior to the Kevin Pietersen incident rearing its head," he said. "It just hasn't been a consideration.
"I first spoke to Andy about this a few weeks ago and said I'm considering it and would talk to him at end of the South Africa series. By the time I spoke to him again, my mind was made up and I think he knew that."
Strauss sent letters to members of the England team explaining his decision to retire and they responded by sending him 100 bottles of wine.
It was a sign of the high regard the dressing room held him in, a view Cook voiced as he paid tribute to his predecessor.
"Obviously I've got huge boots to fill," said Cook. "It feels like I've spent all my England career walking out to bat with him. Unfortunately it might mean I have to take the first ball no

Barclays faces SFO investigation

Barclays faces SFO investigation

Barclays signBarclays is already facing an investigation by the Financial Services Authority
Barclays says the UK's Serious Fraud Office has "commenced an investigation" into payments between the bank and Qatar Holding LLC, part of sovereign wealth fund Qatar Investment Authority.
The probe relates to 2008 when Barclays was raising money from Middle East investors during the banking crisis.
The Financial Services Authority had said in July it was looking at issues around Barclays' deal with the Qataris.
Separately, in June Barclays was fined £290m for rigging Libor interest rates.
Investors will be closely watching Barclays share price when the London stock market reopens for trade on Thursday morning. Its shares had closed down by 1.38% at 186.35 pence on Wednesday.
Semi-nationalised
Neither Barclays or the SFO would release further details of the investigation.
But it is understood that after the FSA investigation was begun in July, information was made available to the SFO and it has now opened a formal investigation.
Barclays has not revealed which payments between it and Qatar are being investigated by the SFO.
The bank raised some £2bn from Qatar Holding in 2008.
Funds raised from investors in Qatar and Abu Dhabi that year allowed Barclays to avoid being semi-nationalised along with Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds.
In July, the Financial Services Authority said it was investigating both the bank and four current and former senior employees, including finance director Chris Lucas.
Resignation
Barclays is currently experiencing one of the most stormy times in its recent history.
It was fined £290m by UK and US regulators for manipulating Libor, an interbank lending rate which affects mortgages and loans.
Chief executive Bob Diamond resigned in the wake of the affair.
Barclays has also been caught up in another investigation, relating to the mis-selling of complex financial products - interest rate swaps - to small businesses.

The Queen has declared the London 2012 Paralympics officially open, during a spectacular opening ceremony watched by some 80,000 spectators.
Britain's first Paralympic Games gold medallist, Margaret Maughan, 84, had the honour of lighting the cauldron.
Paralympics chief Lord Coe told the crowd: "Prepare to be inspired, prepare to be dazzled, prepare to be moved."
Earlier, athletes paraded around the Olympic Stadium, with ParalympicsGB entering last to huge cheers.
'Games to remember'
The opening ceremony signalled the start of 11 days of competition by 4,200 athletes from 164 countries, including more than 300 athletes from the home nation.
Wheelchair basketball, shooting, swimming and track cycling are among the events set to feature on the opening day.

Analysis

From Stephen Hawking, the Hadron Collider and the Big Bang, to the biggest apple bite, this was a very different opening to that of the Olympics.
It may not have cost as much to put on, but it was just as ambitious.
There were echoes of the Olympics with roles for Shakespeare's Tempest and Tom Heatherwick's cauldron, as well as royals, flags and a parade of elite athletes.
But though the light panels in the crowd created the same spectacular effect as in the Olympic opener, they have now become known as Paralympixels.
At the Olympics opener, the key excerpt from The Tempest was Caliban's tribute to the "Isles of Wonder".
Tonight, it was Miranda's marvelling at "how beauteous mankind is" in her brave new world speech.
This was a ceremony that was more nuanced in its celebration of elite sport. A celebration of diversity. But no less of a celebration for that.
Lord Coe told the crowd at the east London stadium: "It is my great honour to say welcome home to the Paralympic Games."
He said Britain "was ready" and the crowds in attendance would be "unprecedented", adding: "These will be a Games to remember."
Eight members of the British under-22 wheelchair basketball team were given the honour of carrying the Paralympic flag into the stadium. It was raised by members of the armed forces, before the Queen declared the Games open.
British swimmer Liz Johnson, a medallist from Beijing 2008, wheelchair rugby judge Richard Allcroft and David Hunter, who is coaching the ParalympicsGB equestrian team, each stepped forward to take the official oaths on behalf of competitors and officials.
At the close of the ceremony, 24-year-old Royal Marine Commando Joe Townsend - an aspiring Olympic triathlete, who lost both legs while serving in Afghanistan - descended on a zip wire into the stadium from the top of the nearby Orbit tower.
He handed the flame to David Clarke, a member of the ParlympicsGB five-a-side football team, who passed the torch to Ms Maughan, who won gold in archery at the 1960 Rome Paralympics.
She lit a tiny flame on the ground, igniting more than 200 copper petals. Long stems then rose towards each other to form a cauldron, signifying unity.
'Big bang'
The ParalympicsGB athletes earlier entered the stadium to David Bowie's Heroes, led by Peter Norfolk, the two-time Paralympic wheelchair tennis champion, who carried the union jack. He later described it as a "wow moment".

Paralympics in numbers

  • 4,280 athletes from 166 countries are to compete throughout the 11 days of sport
  • Almost 300 athletes will represent ParalympicsGB
  • Over 2.4 million tickets have been sold so far - including half a million to visitors from abroad
  • There are 503 gold medals to be won in 21 sports
In one heart-stopping moment during the show, six Paralympians and former competitors - including Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson - were flown into the stadium in gold wheelchairs.
Disabled ex-serviceman David Rawlins flew a twin-engined Tecnam P2006 light aircraft over the stadium to kick off the proceedings.
A sphere ignited the "big bang" - something which Prof Hawking, a world-renowned physicist who has motor neurone disease, has written about extensively - to start the show and fireworks lit up the stadium.
Professor Hawking and actor Sir Ian McKellen played prominent roles in the ceremony, which also featured a host of deaf and disabled artists, local children and performers newly-trained in circus skills.
Some 3,000 volunteers took part in the event, which organisers entitled Enlightenment and said was "profoundly about science and humanity".
Throughout the ceremony, Prof Hawking acted as a guide to Miranda - a character from William Shakespeare's play The Tempest, who was central to the show - while actor Sir Ian played Prospero, another character from the play.
Inspired by uncertain British weather, umbrellas were also a big theme in the ceremony, which was described as "both spectacular and deeply human" by organisers.

The Queen was welcomed by Sir Philip Craven, President of the International Paralympic Committee, before the union jack was carried in by representatives of the armed forces.
It is the first time the monarch has officiated at the openings of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Teams from all 164 countries paraded into the stadium to music mixed and played by three London-based DJs.
The Paralympic torch began its journey in Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire, the spiritual home of the Paralympic Games, on Tuesday night.
It was carried by 580 torchbearers in total, and after being carried past some of London's most famous landmarks, was used to light a scaled-down version of the Olympic cauldron.
The torch had earlier been delayed but Games organisers Locog confirmed the flame arrived at the stadium in time to light the cauldron.
UK Sport and the British Paralympic Association have set a minimum target of 103 medals this time from at least 12 sports, including swimming, athletics and rowing and hopes are high that ParalympicsGB will emulate the success of Team GB.
Prime Minister David Cameron says the Paralympics will "inspire a lot of people and change people's views on disability"
Britain finished second in the medals table at the 2008 Games in Beijing, winning 42 golds, 29 silvers and 31 bronzes. China were top with 211 medals, of which 89 were gold.
More than 2.4 million tickets for events have already been sold, including half a million to overseas visitors.
In a statement released before she opened the Games, the Queen said: "It is with tremendous pride that the people of London and the United Kingdom welcome the world to the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
"The Games are returning to the country where they first began, more than 60 years ago.
"We look forward to celebrating the uplifting spirit which distinguishes the Paralympic Games from other events, drawing on Britain's unique sporting heritage."

England v South Africa: Hashim Amla hits 150 in Proteas win

Second one-day international, Ageas Bowl:
South Africa 287-5 (50 overs) beat England 207 (40.4 overs) by 80 runs
Hashim Amla hit 150 as South Africa beat England by 80 runs in the second one-day international at Southampton.
The Proteas' victory took them to the top of the International Cricket Council one-day rankings  and ended England's run of 10 wins from their last 10 completed ODIs.
The tourists' 287-5 in 50 overs was built on an 89-run opening partnership between Amla and Graeme Smith (52).
England lost regular wickets as they were dismissed for 207 in 40.4 overs.
Chasing 288 at a run-rate of 5.76 an over, England got off to the worst possible start when Lonwabo Tsotsobe bowled the England captain Alastair Cook with the second ball of the innings.

Test Match Special analysis

"That was a brilliant 100 from Amla, off 96 balls with 10 fours. If you wrapped it up and brought it out in 15 years, you would still say that it was a wonderful innings. His placement and the way he timed the ball was superb."
Ian Bell (45), Jonathan Trott (23) and Craig Kieswetter (20) all made starts without going on, and when Eoin Morgan was sixth man out for 27 with 129 runs still needed off 98 balls, England's last realistic chance of winning the game had gone.
Samit Patel and Steven Finn gave the supporters in the Ageas Bowl some fun with some spirited late hitting in a last-wicket stand of 37 before Patel was last man out, caught behind by AB de Villiers off Morne Morkel for 45 from 51 balls.
Spinner Robin Peterson was the pick of the Proteas' bowlers, although his figures of 2-51 from nine overs were rather ruined by conceding 20 runs to Finn and Patel in his final over.
On a slow wicket that gave help to the spinners and made run scoring difficult, South Africa's challenging total of 288 was largely down to Amla's superbly paced innings, his 150 coming from just 124 deliveries.
In the 57th innings of his one-day international career, Amla became the fastest batsman to 3,000 ODI runs, requiring 12 innings fewer than Sir Vivian Richards.

Hashim Amla's last seven ODI innings

  • 52 v Australia in Durban 28 October 2011
  • 112 v Sri Lanka in Paarl 11 January 2012
  • 55 v Sri Lanka in East London 14 January 2012
  • 8 v New Zealand in Wellington 25 February 2012
  • 92 v New Zealand in Napier 29 February 2012
  • 76 v New Zealand in Auckland 3 March 2012
  • 150 v England in Southampton 28 August 2012
It was also the highest score of Amla's one-day international career, surpassing his 140 against Bangladesh in Benoni in 2008, and his sixth score of 50 or above in his last seven ODI innings.
He was content to allow Smith to take most of the early strike, but when his opening partner top-edged a short Tim Bresnan delivery to wicketkeeper Kieswetter in the 20th over, he accelerated the scoring rate without ever completely dominating the England attack.
He managed to keep his focus after running out JP Duminy (14) in the 26th over, and brought up his 10th century in his 59th ODI with a clip off Patel to mid-on in the 41st over.
He could have been dismissed an over earlier, but Kieswetter failed to take a leg-side chance off the bowling of Finn.
It was Kieswetter's third drop of the innings, the England wicketkeeper having earlier put down Amla and AB de Villiers, and his clumsy performance behind the stumps may increase the calls for Test wicketkeeper Matt Prior to be recalled to the one-day squad.
Amla reached his 150 in the final over of the South Africa innings with a beautifully timed late cut off Finn, but was caught off the next ball by Bresnan at short third man.
South Africa become the first country to top the ICC rankings in all three formats of the game. England drop to third in the ODI rankings behind India.
De Villiers's side lead the five-match series 1-0 after rain forced the first one-day international in Cardiff to be abandoned after only 5.3 overs.
The third game is at The Oval on Friday.
